The youngest district of Chiang Mai, Thailand
Galyani Vadhana is the youngest district of Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. It is named after the Princess Galyani Vadhana. It was founded on December 26, 2009, making it the 878th and newest district of Thailand. The terrain is made up of beautiful mountains and forests. It is also home to the largest natural pine forest in Thailand. The population consists primarily of Karen hill tribes, who preserve their own unique culture and customs.
The creation of a new district in the area dates back to 1993. On May 17, 1993 the Tambon council of Ban Chan sub-district proposed the formation of a minor district out of three sub-districts in the Mae Chaem district. In the following years, its development was under preparation. With the onset of the Asian financial crisis in 1997, however, all pending new districts were canceled by the government in order to avoid additional costs.
The project came on the agenda again in 2005, with proposals and studies done by the Chiang Mai province and the Department of Provincial Administration. On December 2, 2008 the cabinet approved in principle to the creation of a new district in honor of Princess Galyani Vadhana, as proposed by the Ministry of Interior.
On July 7, 2009 King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially bestowed the name Galyani Vadhana on the new district, which had previously been referred to as Wat Chan. In a cabinet meeting on October 13, 2009 the Ministry of Interior was authorized to set up the new district.
With an existing royal project already in Ban Chan, it was decided that the new district did not initially need to be a sub-district; it could be created as a full district immediately. The district office is now under construction in Village 2 of Chaem Luang sub-district. Until its completion, rooms of the sub-district council in Ban Chan will be used as the temporary district office.
The Abhisit Government completed drawing up a draft of Royal Decree to establish Amphoe Galyani Vadhana on October 13, 2009. King Bhumibol Adulyadej signed it on December 18 of the same year. It is known as the “Royal Decree Establishing Amphoe Galyani Vadhana, Changwat Chiang Mai, BE 2552 (2009)”
